Within the subject area of Physical Education at Saltersgate School, pupils are offered a variety of learning experiences within a range of contexts, including:

  • Swimming
  • Individual / Team games
  • Dance
  • Athletics
  • Gymnastics
  • Boccia
  • Central net games
  • Striking and fielding games

A sensory approach is used in collaboration with the schools Occupational Therapist (OT) for pupils requiring this form of learning environment.

The majority of pupils receive 2 x 50mins lessons a week, 1 swimming lesson and 1 PE lesson.

All pupils within Saltersgate School follow 1 of 2 paths designed to effectively meet the needs of our pupils. Both paths are designed as a base for certification courses to be completed within the senior phase.

Senior Phase

Pupils in the senior phase have opportunities to work towards a range of SQA qualifications. Courses in the senior phase also follow 2 progression routes, with certification currently offered at National 1 level, National 2 and National 3. We have recently introduced personal achievement within our programme.

Extra Curricular

Pupils at Saltersgate are given the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities during their lunchtime including;

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Fitness
  • Tennis
  • Swimming
  • Boxercise
  • Sensory programme

These activates are available for pupils to choose at various times throughout the school year.

Active Schools

Active Schools is a sportscotland (the national agency for sport) initiative.

Saltersgate works with our active schools coordinator in order to provide children with the opportunity to represent the school in a variety of activities within the wider educational community. Some of our pupils have gone on to represent Lothian squad at national events.

Community

Within all our courses delivered within PE, pupils will have the opportunity to build on prior learning and develop a range of skills and attributes which will contribute to continuing with leisure pursuits and competitive sport on leaving school. Our ultimate aim is to give our pupils a sound foundation to pursue a life-long HEALTHY lifestyle within their local community.
